How to Logon to GlobalProtect

The GlobalProtect agent is a small piece of software that resides on all admin workstations that require direct access to the BATHNES network. The agent communicates with the GlobalProtect Portal to obtain the appropriate policy for the user. It then establishes and maintains a secured connection to the BATHNES GlobalProtect Gateway.

How to Logon

  • The GlobalProtect agent runs in the background and is controlled using its system tray icon.

  • If you can’t see the GlobalProtect icon you will need to click the ‘Show hidden icons’ arrow icon to display the hidden notification items. Now right click the GlobalProtect notification icon and select ‘Connect’. If the ‘Connect’ option is greyed out please click ‘Open’

If you clicked Open

  • The main GlobalProtect window will be displayed. Click the ‘Settings’ tab then enter your BATHNES username and password in the appropriate fields. If the ‘Remember Me’ option is ticked please un-tick. Now click ‘Apply’.

  • If this is the first time you have connected using the GlobalProtect agent it may prompt you to save the portal information. Click ‘OK’ to continue.

  • After a few seconds you will see a balloon notification informing you that the service has connected. If the credentials are incorrect the logon box will re-appear.

  • You can now close the main GlobalProtect window as you have now connected to the BATHNES network and can launch Outlook as normal.
  • Subsequent connections you should always click ‘Connect’

If you clicked Connect

  • After a short delay a logon box will be displayed. Enter your BATHNES username and password in the appropriate fields. The Portal field should already be populated but if it is empty please enter as shown below. Click ‘Apply’ to logon.

  • If this is the first time you have connected using the GlobalProtect agent it may prompt you to save the portal information. Click ‘OK’ to continue.

  • The dialogs will now disappear. After a few seconds you will see a balloon notification informing you that the service has connected. If the credentials are incorrect the logon box will re-appear.

  • You have now connected to the BATHNES network and can launch Outlook as normal.

How to Log Off

  • When you log off of your workstation it will automatically log off and disconnect the GlobalProtect VPN connection.
  • If you want to just disconnect the VPN session without logging off of your workstation you can follow the same procedure as logging on except you click the ‘Disconnect’ option.

Always display the GlobalProtect notification icon

Windows 7 by default hides the majority of notification icons. You can override this for specific icons if you would prefer to always see the status of a particular agent. You may feel you would like to see at a glance if the GlobalProtect agent is connected or not. If you do then please do the following to always display it.

  • Right click the ‘Show hidden icons’ arrow in the notification area. Then click ‘Customize’.

  • Scroll down the list until you find ‘GlobalProtect client’. Using the dropdown menu change the selection to ‘Show icon and notifications’. Click ‘OK’ to confirm the changes.

  • The GlobalProtect icon will now always be visible in the system tray whether it’s connected or disconnected.
