Computer Recycling

As schools replace their IT equipment they increasingly need to dispose or recycle their old equipment. It is very important that schools adhere to the following advice when deciding what to do with this old equipment.

It is a Government requirement for any old computer equipment to be disposed in an environmentally responsible way. This is according to The Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Regulations (WEEE) 2006 -

Choosing a Commercial Company

When deciding on a company to use for recycling your computer equipment always ask for proof that they comply with the following:

  • WEEE - Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive
  • RoHS - Restriction of Hazardous Substances Directive

They should also be authorised by the Environment Agency. This can be proved by asking for the following:

  • Environment Agency Waste Carriers Licence
  • Environment Agency T11 Waste Management Licence - For the Repair or Refurbishment of Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment

You must also ask for proof of data destruction (if applicable). They should provide you with a certificate which states any data on drives has been securely wiped.

If you are unsure if a company does meet these requirements give us their details and we will check their accreditations.
